Hi there, I'm helping a friend who is moving into new apt rental in Jersey City, and there's new kind of acoustic hard plaster on ceiling, with these little "drips" that resemble --yeah -- that bastard brainchild of the 70s, cottage cheese ceilings. Question: how do we minimize these through painting? Yes, we can paint it, (and scraping it off not worth the time and $ investment on a rental). Questions: would "texturing" sponging or ragging minimize the cottage cheese look, adding a glaze? Or would it be better, applying a flat flat matte color? Would it better to use roller or sprayer since no furn yet? Finally, any good cheap painting licensed co's out there you recommend? Thanks!

You may be deaing with a lot of variables. If the ceiling is original and old as I guess it is, by painting it with a roller could cause the ceiling to separate from the drywall it was applied to. In such cases, you would be better just spraying it with a light coat which will also give you a more even application. You will want to use a flat matte for this. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

Also check with your rental agreement - if there is a clause that requries you to maintain the "original" appearance of the dwelling, that could create some issues for you.

Does it look something like this:

That's whats called a stippled ceiling. It's done with compound and a "stippling" brush.
Generally, you can roll paint stipple ceiling without any problems. "Popcorn ceilings" tend to peel- or the roller pulls the styrene pellets off. In that case, you're better off spraying.

Lowe's sells a paint specifically for minimizing the look of the popcorn ceiling. It is very thick, takes forever to dry(not that it matters, it is a ceiling), but will help "fill in" the texture. It is great for popcorn and like type ceilings and sand painted walls.

A simple solution is to not paint it at all. Once it's painted you can't remove it nearly as easily, and painting it is messy and time consuming.

When painting textured surfaces use a big fluffy roller.
