I would like to paint the Hardie Board trim which surrounds the windows on the rear of my house (only 3-side brick). I have a gallon of Valspar interior primer. Would it be okay to paint the trim with this paint?
Not sure it would be a good idea, since outdoor primers usually have components helping them to resist better to rain, sunshine etc, components indoor primers don't have.
Your indoor primer may quickly look bad and you'll have to start all over again...
To expand on what Sudcaro noted, indoor primer, which is typically PVA based, isn't as UV or moisture resistant as acrylic based (interior/exterior primer).
When we did the exterior fiber cement trim work here, we just went over the boards with exterior paint. Unless it's a $5 gallon of oops/mis-tint paint, you pretty much get what you pay for when it comes to paint. The cheap stuff is cheap for a reason.
Looks like they recommend to use 100% acrylic outdoor primer and paint. I will be sure to make the minimal investment to get the right paint.
Thanks for the help everyone!!
Visit a stand-alone paint store to be sure to get the right product. Never buy the cheapest paint product. You only want to do the job once.
