Well, if it were me, I'd paint a mural in there. That's what I usually do if a space is small, drab and pictures just don't see quite right.

Of course, that's not a solution that works for everyone.

Look into the Ikea TRONES Shoe storage bins. They do not have to be stacked as pictured. I put a single height row of them the length of my hallway. They're not just for shoes, I keep hats & scarfs in one, etc. They looks surprisingly nice, I get lots of complements on them and no one can believe they came from Ikea!
They only come in white and black, I bought some for my bedroom and painted them with plastic spray paint intended for outdoor patio furniture. So far, so good; the paint has not chipped or pealed and holds up to cleaning. The bins themselves pop out for cleaning. I also put one in my kitchen for recycling, just pop out the bin and dump it into the recycling bin!
