We've got something similar, and have nothing up there. The cat who likes to test gravity tends to nap up there, and anything he sees up there, he regards as a challenge. (The coconut off the top of the fridge was one of his louder moments)

I highly recommend not putting anything up there.

I store my colorful serving dishes/bowels and ceramic casarole dishes up there due to lack of storage.

It gets super dirty because it's a difficult place to clean.

If I had the storage space, I wouldn't have anything on top of my cabinets.

I see you don't have cats.

Otherwise you would know that the area you describe is where cats hang out and plot and plan. At least that's where my can frequently be found. Not only is it high above everything, but thanks to the laws of thermodynamics, that's where all the warm air is.

If I did not have cats. I guess I would put some pretty baskets or flowers up there.

I think you should put nothing there, but do agree with painting it a different color. It could look very dramatic and interesting/ eye catching with color. Paint is such an easy decorating tool!

As you can see from all the opinions, it depend on an individual's personal taste. When we remodeled our kitchen I made sure we had an open space over the cabinets for my collectibles; I have a lot of antique and vintage items like coffee grinders, colorful tins, wooden mashers, etc. I don't mind occasionally dusting them, and it all looks great with the antique kitchen utensils I have hanging in the sky light in the center of the kitchen. But someone who prefers a modern look would not like my country kitchen. That's okay, I live here, they don't. Decorate (or not) the space how you like it, and depending on how much free time you have to keep it dusted.

As a side note, we do have cats. As I write this I can hear one playing with the cordless blinds in my son's room. One of them does occasionally climb on top one of the cabinets, so I have unbreakable items up there. In his younger years, occasionally something would fly off onto the floor, always in the middle of the night. He's old now though, so he doesn't cause problems anymore. Just keep cats in mind if you have them.
