I recently had black granite countertops installed in my kitchen. I have never had granite tops so I was unsure of what the seams were meant to look like, but everyone that has come over to see them says the seams aren't right. It looks as though when the granite was cut there were chips on the surface. The two pieces were then sealed together on site, but with these jagged little pieces in the seam. The seam is not a straight line. Someone told me that after they cut the slab of granite then they should sand or polish the two pieces before installing them and making a seam. Is this right? Am I being too picky?

Contact your contractor. A) This sounds like sloppy work B) If it is not too bad he can patch it with a tinted compound paste which does not show and is very durable

I definitelty don't think you are being too picky. When you put out that kind of expense you should be happy with the end result.

You deserve to get what you paid to have----a quality kitchen counter. Call the contractor.

Sounds like a dull diamond saw, or not enough water(lubricant), or the cut was made too fast when it was cut. This usually results in what is called chip-out.
As far as the seaming- a seam edge is never polished, the raw saw edge creates a better "tooth" for the epoxy.

I would be very unhappy with seams that weren't straight and were jagged. I've always believed that you should barely be able to detect seams in granite. I would call your fabricator and tell them you are unhappy with the seams. Be adament and don't back down.

I agree with other posters here. The contractor should be responsible for touching up the seam to make sure it blends in with the rest of the countertop. Not only does a ragged edge look "amateurish" but it also leaves places for nasty stuff to hide. Is it also hard to clean that area?

another +1 to contact your contractor/fabricator.

The seam on my counters are almost invisible, and the installer spent a long time working on the area during the installation to make sure it was unnoticeable. No one notices it unless I directly point it out to them.
