Our new house desperately needs new floor and new paint. My husband and I can't take enough days off from work so we decided to hire a professional to do one of these jobs (we'll do the other one ourselves). He thinks we should hire a professional to get the paint job done (we have a two-story house with 4 br and 3 bath). I'd rather hire someone to install the laminate flooring and tiles. Which one of these two projects do you think should be done by a professional?
flooring. I have always painted my own homes all myself, even 2 story rooms, with the exception being their ceilings.Painting can be done by anyone. It's all in the prep work. Now it becomes more complicated if you have alot of wall repair to do also. Just plan to do that part ahead of time.Granted,I have never laid tile before and do intend to try it in a small bathroom, but it does require special equipment that would need to be rented. Also, a mess up in painting is easier to fix then it would be with the flooring. One wrong measure, one wrong cut and it's all off. If I can paint, anyone can. It just seems like a daunting challenge when you think of the whole house at once.Just think of finishing one room at a time.Set aside even one day of the weekend, have your paint and supplies ready and work together and you'd be surprised how quickly you can crack out a room. Good luck

Flooring is more difficult - not in the "oh, this is hard, hard work!" sense but in the, "dang - we really screwed that up!" sense!
I also vote for hiring a pro to install your flooring. Even if you mess up painting, it's a much easier (and cheaper!) fix than floor installation mistakes.
I agree with the others, hire out for the flooring and do the painting yourself. You can do the painting a little bit at a time if you need to, or on weekends or evenings, here and there, etc. That's what I'm doing.
If you husband feels more comfortable doing the floor, I would let him attempt a room, then he can chek out the system, and he might find, he changes his mind wnd would paint...or he might do a bang up job and hear you say...go for it pops.
Hire out the flooring. We are in the process of putting in new floors and painting. The contractor will start on the master bath tomorrow (tile). We are doing the painting ourselves. We just finihed painting the laundry room tonight. I have the paint for the bath, kitchen, dining and living rooms but it will be a few weeks before we finish. According to me. We had laminate hardwood installed in the living room but my husband decided to do the dining room and computer room himself and it is so easy to mess up a board. You have to be really careful because if you tap too hard it will chip. I wouldn't let him do the tile in the guest bathroom or kitchen. There is so much cutting involved in laying the tile (at least it was in our house) a lot of hard work to.
We've done both ourselves and I'd definitely hire out the flooring and do the painting yourself.
