My apartment is SO bachelor-like. You know, soda cans lying around. Stacks and stacks of papers. A big bed, a computer desk and office chair, and not much else. I know, I know, I live like a slob and I'm "working on it" to bring more order into my everyday home life.

Slob-initis aside, my apartment also has a problem of its own. It has no character, or at least one that is sensible. There are bits and pieces of color here and there. My bath towel is purple, and the sheet set I bought tonight is gold satin-colored. There are no curtains surrounding the blinds on any of the windows.

You know, I have always enjoyed walking through colonial style homes and thought of how nice it would be to have furniture of that period, but I also like mission style furniture and other stuff like what the Shakers used to make. For me, I just like anything that looks organic, OLD and is sturdy (none of that flimsy, plastic, metal crap for me!).

How can I go about CHEAPLY assembling a furniture set (dressers, bed, kitchen tables, chairs, cabinets) that will make my apartment feel more "old fashioned" and maybe even "woodsy"? I don't have to get everything at once, in fact I'm not one into buying bedroom "sets". I would rather put thought and time into this.

Any suggestions?

Not sure what area you are in, or if any thrift stores are available nearby, but I've always found good deals there. You can also check on Craigslist, I recently picked up a really nice dresser that only needed a good cleaning for $50.

Ditto on the thrift shop route. Look up all the ones nearby, and keep an eye out for stuff that you can use. It's a crapshoot, so don't automatically expect that if you want the perfect table that you're going to find it on your next visit. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you'll hit 0 for 5. Ya never know, but like my recent purchase, a solid wood side table (made in USA too) for $10 ... all it takes is that one deal to make the trips worthwhile.

I'm in the Chicopee/Springfield, MA area. Thanks for the suggestion on checking out thrift stores.

you can stain anything to make it look like wood, or even exotic wood, but youre going to need a working area for the stinky polyurethane.

Your home will become a reflection of you as you buy things you love. I suggest you start with some kind of fabric...it could be as small as a pillow, or placemats, or it could be a chair, curtains or sofa. From there you will have a jumping off point for colors.
