When we bought our house is was some trendy gray-brown shade of some coffee concoction. I guess it's trendy and other people like it, but I hate it. I hated it from the moment I walked in the door, but I figured we'd just paint over it. Well, it's been just awful to cover. It takes 3 coats of paint to get rid of it. I really wish the house had been white or some warm shade of white.
Look at new homes being built and you will see that neutral colors are used for a reason. Less likely for the home to be rejected because of wall colors is why.Its a that isn't going to go with my couch etc.
I have to agree with your partner, walls with a little color are more appealing then white. It looks more homey. If you put two identical houses side by side and one had tan walls and one had white, I would guarantee that the house with the tan walls will sell first.

If someone buys a house because of the color of the walls are painted, hummmmm........................................... .
I think people paint the walls a neutral color so the potential buyers notice the house itself, not really the way it is decorated.....So you arent saying eww, I hate this shade of green...or oh, this is a bright yellow.... if it is just neutral, there is no real reaction to it.....

HGTV really has brainwashed a lot of people.
A lot of people won't buy a house because the wall color or wall paper or the color of the carpet. Some people just can't see past those things. I wasn't suggesting that they would buy the house because of tan walls, I was suggesting that the FEEL of the house overall will be nicer with some color on the walls. The same could be said for a pale yellow, a nice shade of green, whatever.

golfgal has a point. Alot of buyers, especially first-time buyers cannot visualize so the Seller has to do it for them. The neutral, fresh paint offers an inviting space where they/the Buyer can imagine themselves in with their belongings, their furnishings, and having a great time with their friends and family. It's about creating an atmosphere.
We painted our entire house in a neutral earth color (gosh, can't remember the name?!@#) with bright white trim and moldings. Staged it, the fragrant plug-ins, had chocolates by the front door, yadda yadda. We did all the work ourselves. The house got mulitple offers $7000 over the Asking Price within 72 hours.
OP, if it's too much to paint the whole house, then pick 1 or 2 rooms where a neutral color would have the most impact. Stage appropriately and you should have a winner there! Good luck on your sale!
