Thank you for your interest and intructions. Here are the before and after photos of my cheap brass chandelier painted "brushed nickel." The trick is to apply thin, thin coats of spray. -cityflair
I did a similar brass fixture in that textured 'hammered bronze' paint that you can get at Lowes, and it looks awesome. Did a breakfast chair/table set too -- but this paint is chipping on surfaces that get rubbed.
No, I didn't sand it. I did use a damp cloth the day before to get off any dust. I think the reason the finish will continue to look great is that there isn't any "friction," or use, on a light fixture. I'm betting the paint would scratch off on something that was used alot or rubbed.
Now I'm inspired to paint the chandelier in our breakfast nook. It's brass and dated-looking, but the shape is OK. I bet I could paint it a dark iron color and do something different with the bulbs. My chandelier's bulbs face downward, not upward, so clip-on shades won't work. Right now, it has some opaque white glass shades that looks vaguely like UFOs. I'll post a pic and maybe some of you can suggest ways I can update it?
