I drive a Honda Accord 2008 4 cylinder automatic. I noticed recently that it is consuming gas like CRAZY!!! I mean it was above the half mark and I only drove 15 miles (city) and now it is well below the half mark. I thought it was the air filter so my husband checked and yes it is pretty dirty so we ordered a new one but dirty air filter cause so bad mileage.

It has 25K miles on it. I am located in Houston, TX. What could be wrong? The tire pressure looks okay or else there should be some light or something indicating low tire pressure.

Any thoughts!

Is the gauge showing less fuel than what is in the car, or has it used that much gas? I would fill up the car to see if it takes half a tank of gas. If it takes less than half a tank, it's likely a problem with the fuel gauge, but in any event, I would take it back to Honda for warranty service.

Thanks bmwguydc, I am not sure if that is a gauge issue or not. I just know that the fuel is going down very very fast. I will fill up my car completely today and reset the counter and then see how it runs.

What is your style of driving like in the city? How fast do you accelerate when getting a green light? Is there a lot of stop and go traffic in your city? Also, do you keep your car empty or are there passengers and stuff in your car?

@Miu,

I drive under 40 mph.

>>> How fast do you accelerate when getting a green light?

I don't really accelerate that fast.

>> Is there a lot of stop and go traffic in your city?

There are 5-6 signals but even then it should not burn that much gas.

>> do you keep your car empty or are there passengers and stuff in your car?

Empty.

On my truck, the first half takes a while, but the second half drops a lot faster. The fuel level gauge is fine ... the reason is the design of the tank; it's wider at the top than at the bottom.

2008 with 25K miles. Isn't it under warranty? Just take it to the dealership.

I bet it's the fuel gauge. It's still under warranty so I'd take it back and have them take a look.

It also might be the "float" in the gasoline tank.

But I confess, I've been stealing the gasoline while you're parked - gotta have some reserve for the upcoming summer ya know.

All kidding aside like others have said if it's in warranty, bring it in for service.
