I love my upright Panasonic and it has served me well for 15 years. It finally needs a replacement part that costs $50 and I'm wondering if maybe I should just buy another vacuum. The one thing the Panasonic doesn't do a great job at is picking up dirt from the wood floors. I use the hose attachment to do a thorough job. Any recommendations for vacuums that do well on wood as well as carpet?

Dyson for an upright. Miele for a canister.

Trust me. I know my vacuum cleaners.

If you use the hose attachment often, you'll prefer a canister vacuum. Hoses are longer and less cumbersome on canisters.

They're lighter weight for regular vacuuming because you're only pushing the brush, not the engine.

You can buy a Miele model with a full sized brush head that's just as powerful as an upright.

Check out this vacuum review site. The Miele models take the lead in the top ten canisters. 6 out of the top 10 are Miele models.

I have had an Electrolux Harmony (canister) for a few years and it is quiet, has a HEPA filter, and has good suction. Works well on carpets and hard floors, and most of all, easy to get under beds, sofas etc. Unless you want to spend $900+ on a Miele

Had an Electrolux Harmony cannister and was very happy with it, considering we have a golden retriever and majority of house is hardwood floors, with some area rugs. Recently switched the Electrolux to the RV and bought a Dyson cannister for the house. Very happy with the Dyson too.

Dyson did not come out very well even in comparison to cheaper models i consumer reports testing. I would look at what the professional use on hard surfces. That is a largte treated dust mop.You can often buy teh at the same palce and the spray to treat as commercial cleaners get them.

I'll have to ask the cleaning lady what she uses. Both the carpet and wood floors are always clean when I come home on Wednesday. I'll find out by Wednesday.

You need a vacuum without a beater bar or a brush. Otherwise you will just fling the crud around the room. As long as it has good suction, any vacuum that is using suction only will work well.

We also found that the roomba robot vacuum works pretty well. It does fling the crud around the room, but since it goes over each area more than once, it ultimatley pick most of the junk up.

What really seems to work the best is a broom, and then just use your vacuum to pick up the piles and sweep under the furniture where the broom cannot go. WE like the Swiffer damp pad thingy as well. Use it after vacuuming. It gets up any spilled milk, tears, bits of peanut butter, etc.
