We just rented a house that has hardwood floors on the first level. I have never had hardwood floors so unsure of how to care for them. The landlord mentioned a cleaner that she used but I couldn't find it. The previous tenant just used water so it is not as shiny as it could be. I googled it and get so many varied answers just not to sure, some people swear by vinegar and water, others say no water. Any ideas?

In your big box retailers you can find a product like Orange glo specifically for hard wood floors. There is also Murphys cleaner designed for wood floors and furniture. Look in the "dusting" section of yor local store and you'll find some products. I use the "swiffer" Orange glo for hard woods as an every day cleaner and the Murphys soap once a month as a deep cleaner (hands and knees) - which I then use on my cabinets as well.

Keep in mind that wood and water do not mix.. You don't want to keep any type of water base on the wood floor for very long as this may cause the wood to warp. Don't use any harsh chemicles either as this can strip the finish and or cause it to look very dull.

I use Bona cleaner on my floors. I've been able to find it at Lowe's, home Depot and even Bed Bath and Beyond.

Last summer I had my hardwood floors done and asked the same question. I was told to use non-ammonia Windex and a soft rag to clean the floors and it's worked well.

Our hardwood floor guy said never use Murphy's oil soap (If you've noticed, Murphy's commercials never show them using it on floors - only church pews and the like. Apparently there's some kind of legal action that prevents Murphy's from advising people to use it on hardwood floors.)

I agree about the Murphy's. I don't think it should be used on ANY wood. It leaves an awful haze.

We use Orange Glow and a microfiber mop. You just LIGHTLY mist an area and wipe it down with the mop. It works great and doesn't use a film on the floors.
