I want to buy a new washer/dryer set. I live in a 40+ year old house and the outlet hose for the washer is 1 1/2". The new washers use a 2" outlet hose. To have a plumber come out and replace the pipe is $1000+. I don't know what to do. Does anyone have any ideas. What would you do? I don't know where to even start short of calling in a plumber and you know what he would say. I am just biding my time until I can come up with some sort of plan. I would sure welcome your ideas.

This might seem obvious, but if you have a utility/laundry sink nearby you can discharge the washer into that.
New code dictates that your laundry drainpipe should be 2". I have seen older ones 1 1/2" that still worked fine, providing there were no other obstructions in the pipe.
You say that the problem is the outlet hose, but I think you mean the discharge pipe that the hose fits into. The hose must fit into the pipe making sure there is an air gap.
This might seem obvious, but if you have a utility/laundry sink nearby you can discharge the washer into that.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure about getting a hose adapter. I was hoping for some ideas about what to do next and this is something I can ask about.
Most of the drain hoses - the hose from the machine to the pipe, are 1". They should fit fin into your 1.5" drain pipe. You need a gap in between the hose and the pipe so you don't create a vacuum. Provided your pipe drains quickly you should be fine. If the pipe doesn't drain quickly, you might need to add a utility tub to catch the overflow - still cheaper than changing out old 1.5" iron pipe.
