We now pay a lady $75 a visit, once a week. She is supposed to work 4 hours, but she often stays for 5 or even 8 hours. She spends some time playing with the dog, chatting with my dad, etc. We leave it up to her to decide what needs to be done and what she will or can do. It does not matter, everything she does is a help. Sometimes just general cleaning other times she might clean the ashes out of the fireplace. My dad had to move in with us and she does extra stuff for him (laundry, makes him lunch, etc). She also cam and helped us clean his house to get it ready to sell, but she refused any payment. Said it was just a favor. We try to pay her more or tell her to work less hours, but she refuses. She says we pay her too much.
One housecleaner, 4.5 hrs every other week, $36/hr = $162/visit. Housekeepers used to charge less pre-pandemic, but some of them are now getting >$90/hr in my area and they're hard to come by.
If you do not use a commercial service, do you withhold income tax and pay unemployment tax? Do you provide a Form 1099 to individuals who are "independent contractors' ?
You can google it or check the IRS site, but in general, a family doesn't issue 1099's. This is something a business with an EIN number would issue to contractors they hire for their business.
And unemployment tax would not be applicable. That is what employers pay for their employees.
Definitely discuss this before you hire someone so you're both on the same page.
