That looks like a bath fan.

The “cover” does resemble a fart fan cover… not a typical register.
Have you tried to remove the cover to see what’s behind it? If it’s typical galvanized or fiberboard square/rectangular duct, then it’s just a branch for the bedrm.

In typical apartment form, HVAC duct is usually covered within the apt with a lower ceiling or soffits- such as that in your pic. Where is the air handler in relation to this soffit?

I wonder if some walls were moved some time ago and they never relocated or removed the fan. Just a guess.

Is there a bathroom on the other side of the wall?

No the bathroom is to the left outside of the bedroom. It’s a two bedroom apartment one bath.

I’ll prob ask the maintenance guy here when he comes to fix and look at a couple things.

The property manager who showed me the unit had no idea what it was either.

There is some kind of switch below it but doesn’t do anything when switched on.

Then it is probably the air intake for the heat system.

A “filtration system” in an apartment?
Calling BS on that! Could it be a return? Maybe- but in the ceiling?

And from the pic, it would appear that there’s only a small fraction of the ribs that are actually open…hmmm.
