I have heard about #1 but didn't know it was that easy. I'm going to research that now. Hmm...
Didn't know there was permanent AC filters. Interesting, I've been spending about $20/month for the filters since there are 2 filters in our home side by side one another.

I already have my water heater at 120. Besides that, I also
  1. installed low flow shower head with on/off switch
  2. heat reflective window tint
  3. solar screens on all windows
  4. keep evaporator and condensor coils clean
  5. cook with microwave or toaster oven when possible
  6. once a year remove the back of the clothes dryer to clean out excess lint from blower assembly and dryer hose/vent.
  7. keep ceiling fan blades clean and run the ceiling fan in the correct direction (blowing down for cooling and blowing up for heating).

I'l bet no HOA would permit anyone to paint their roof white.

Plant deciduous trees on east and west sides of house.
CFL Light bulbs
Whole house fan to pre cool house with cool morning air
Use the cheap, four pack, one month, blue furnace filters and change them frequently. That's the advice from the HVAC forums.
Two for one dinner coupons
Use a two cent stamp and switch the sender and addressee. It will be returned to sender for insufficient postage but that's where you wanted it to go anyway.
You can bring those little vodka bottles through airport security, as long as they all fit in a one quart bag. Orange juice is free on the airplane.

We keep the house 78 in the summer and 68 in the winter. Hotter and colder when no one's home or using a particular area of the house.

Lights OUT everywhere we're not.

Those suggestions are good but you need to do the big things to make a real difference.

#1 should be insulation and it's not even on the list, even if your house is insulated you should check it over to make sure it was done right. A good place to start is between the sill and joists in your basement. This is usually skipped and lots of heat loss.

#2 should be new windows if you don't have them.

Lots of of up front cash but the savings can be substantial. I've had customers cut there energy bills more than half with new windows and insulation. It will pay for itself in a short time, even if you only put a few new windows in each year that should be a priority.

That is what our HVAC guy says too. The expensive filters don't work any better and they block air flow so your furnace doesn't work efficiently.

Or just use email instead. That way, you'll save your two cents AND not defraud the postal system at the same time. Besides, some post offices will drop off a postcard at the recipient letting them know that there's a letter with postage due awaiting them.

I'm surprised no mention of rain barrels and grey-water reuse.

They do work better, that's the problem. Unless of course the return area was designed for them.

Number 2 isn't cheap to do. And the other 9 are obvious.
