Had a similar situation a few years ago and the simple fix was to down size the circuit breaker from 50 to 30 amp and change out the receptacle... no issues when home finaled.

Protection is severely compromised when a device designed for 30 amp circuit protection is used with a 50 amp range circuit...

Thought Id share this with y'all, its an old apt complex that has changed owners about 4 times in the past 10 years or so, and is now condemned. Imagine that (condemned). I seriously wonder who was the handyman or 'Billy Bob' that did this??

I've run into a few... even single family homes where the tenant used speaker wire to by-pass the meter and another was in a duplex where one tenant heard noise in the attic space and was sure it was rats... I investigated and found the front unit wired in the rear unit power with a zip extension cord...

No matter how safe something is... there will always be people trying to defeat it.
