Is it common for board members in an HOA not being paid? Maybe I was dumb but I thought they should be compensated in some way, no?

The power to tell someone what color their shutters are required to be, how they are allowed to park in their driveway, where they can put their grill, and what they are allowed to fly on their flag pole.

Unless I could take bribery, I can't see how that power would be of any use.

No compensation that I know of...
just the satisfaction of knowing everybody's business!

Generally, HOA board positions are voluntary.
Our HOA does give discounted dues for serving on the board- and one "free dues for a year" drawing at every annual meeting for those that attend.

From what I understand a lot of HOA board members are pretty good at extracting a pound of flesh from homeowners anyway- isn't that enough?

Default Issue with HOA new fine.

I bought townhome, association rules say that it can't be rented for a year. I didn't realize as this rule was an addendum to the original rules. But this addendum didn't say about any fine or anything. I rented it not knowing about the rule. Anyway, now association after knowing that I've violated their rule, have created a new rule and are now imposing hefty fine if you rent before 1 year. Association has sent me the letter about new rule and based on that they are imposing fine on me. My question is, can they impose a new fine. Can I argue that I'll remove the renter but since fine was not there previously, I should not be fined. If I do it again then they can fine me. Just want to know if it goes to court then can court rule that fine is not valid as it was not there when I rented my townhouse. Any response will be appreciated, especially since I see on blos that always HOA wins if it goes to court and that HOA can do anything.

Thanks again.

Although I am not a lawyer, it seems to me since they changed the rule and added a fine after the fact, you wouldn't be liable for the fine. Unfortunately you will probably have to go through a legal proceeding.

I hate HOAs and would never, ever buy a house in a development of which there was an HOA. Once, was enough!

Power? The board we had were a group of people, who never owned homes, and enjoyed walking the complex and writing up violations for planting flowers. I guess it is the "gang" mentality.
