I got a plant a few weeks ago and started noticing little flies all over. Turns out that they seem to have hatched from the plant. Once outside the problem leveled out but I still have a handful of these weird gnat sized slow moving flies hanging out on the kitchen ceiling.
I got spray and have been swatting. I can't seem to find a way to get rid of them all. Suggestions? We have a toddler so I'd rather not do tons of chemicals though I did try Raid and it's not done much.
Probably fungus gnats. If soil was kept too wet the plant can end up with them eventually. The potting soil of that plant is now full of eggs/larvae so they will keep hatching and breeding. Dump the soil outdoors, wash the plant down, and repot it with new soil. Then make sure the pot drains well.
In addition to what Parnassia suggested, I also have luck spreading sand over the top of the soil for the potted plant. You can buy different colors of soil, too.
