I have hired people off of craigslist to paint in my home, do yardwork or a small home repair. I have found that a lot of these people have broken English. I'd rather help a legal person, instead of paying someone who is here illegally. The reason is that I want to support Americans and legal workers. Also, the money I pay them will stay in the US as oppossed to part of it being sent overseas. That's good for everyone in my community. What are your thoughts?

Do you look for painters, yard workers or small job handymen who were born in the US or grew up in the US?

If I am going to pay someone to do work at my house they are going to be licensed, insured, and legal to work in this country. I have hired companies that have sent me non English workers and I have sent them away.

I don't care if they havent learned a word of English or if they're from Timbuktu

As LONG as they are legal to work in the US

makes sense, but for small jobs, under $500, a cotractor license is not required. examples are painting a couple rooms or doing a days yardwork.

When I hire people to do stuff I don't ask questions like that. I only discuss the job.

You actually verify this?

So some guy comes over to mow your lawn, you actually have him verify his right to work?

I am not the type to pay someone to do my yard work or to paint a couple of rooms. I do that kind of stuff myself.

If they are licensed and insured it is likely they are legal to work in this country. I DO care if they speak English. This is America, if you are going to do work for me you are going to have to be able to communicate with me.

The poll question was not phrased correctly. OF COURSE I would "prefer" someone who's a legal citizen to work, but at what price are you willing to pay for this?

I don't have to guess to know that, when there's additional money involved, a SIGNIFICANT amount of us don't really care if the money we pay is going oversea. Don't believe me? Just ask how many of you shop at Walmart or buy stuff that's made in China, Germany, Timbucktu ?

If you really care, then places like Walmart would've closed down years ago.

So the question should be "Are you willing to pay 200% MORE money just to hire legal workers for your house/yard work?"

I'd suspect not.

I wouldn't verify, but I woudn't hire a guy who could barely speak English. He'd be hard to communicate with and there's a good chance he's not legal to work. There are language qualifications for citizenships and lawn mowing isn't a skill people get work visas for.
