I am looking to buy a vacuum cleaner and have noticed Kenmore Progressive 21514 at Sears for around $249.
It is a canister vacuum cleaner which uses bags.
I was wondering how is the performance of this as compared to some others within the same price (can I do better with some other vacuum?).
All feedback is appreciated. I have never used a canister before, and neither a one with bags. With the bagless cleaner I had earlier, emptying it was a chore and its filter is hard to come by (Panasonic).
Consumer Reports likes Kenmore in general although that specific model wasn't tested in the Nov 2010 issue. CR picked the Kenmore Progressive 27514 as their "best buy" for $300. The other "best buy" canister was the Panasonic MC-CG902 for $210. Both of these vacuums use bags, as do nearly all of the top-rated vacuums in CR's tests. Bagless vacuums are for people that are too lazy to change bags and care less about how well a vacuum works.
The 21514 appears to have 3 filter, 27514 only two. But the latter is shown with a hose length in its specs on Kenmore's website, the former is not. I wonder how much that matters. 21514 also has 5 attachmens, as opposed to 4 with 27514. 27514 has longer reach though (10 ft versus 8 ft).
I have a Kenmore Progressive canister ( I am not sure of the model but I bought it within the last year and paid around$249 on sale)... I had one prior for about 15 years and went right back and bought it again. (Crazy thing happened to the old one- the plug on the cord I guess had gotten abused and was fraying... I got nervous and figured after 15 years it didn't owe me anything).
My only complaint about cannisters, is that they are cumbersome for storage but they work great. I am less and less a fan over time of sears and kenmore, but I think they still have it together with the vacuums.
I think I have the 27515 and I did want to also add that they both come with teh powermate tool which is wonderful on stairs.

Interesting. Well I guess you could lump me into the lazy category then. Why do you feel the bagless do not work as well as bagged ones? I personally was happy with the bagless when they came out because it always seemed like whenever I owned a bagged vacuum eventually I had a hard time finding bags.
Why anyone would buy anything other than a Dyson...is beyond me?
Dyson did not do well inthere overall cleasn test. There were mnay more that scored higher in the test for much less.
