We signed the contract on our new house yesterday (Creekside Commons in Apex). My question is about the TV niche above the fireplace. How do you put components (DVD player, cable STB, etc.) in yours? I dont want to set the TV on top of them, and they won't perch on top of the TV. Either way would look dumb anyway. I plan to talk to the builder about some carpentry work (house is still being built, not sheetrocked yet), but I would love some ideas from folks who have been down this path. I could build something myself but my wife doesn't have much faith in my DIY abilities and is resistant.

Thanks!

We just added a shelf at the top and trimmed it out to match the rest. We did this after it had been built....should be no problem for you builder to do.

We also have the niche you're referring to and we're having our builder put the shelf in it for components but he's also adding doors at my request. The additional charge was only $150. for both. I wanted to be able to close it when we're entertaining as we don't have a formal living room in this home, just the great room with the fireplace. It will also hide any visible wires.

Have you considered that the heat from the fireplace is not good for all those electronics?

Builders put it there cause it looks good.

People who know electronics know that's the worst place for a TV. Liz

My husband built a shelf to house the DVR and DVD players. The TV sits on top of the shelf. Its finished to match our trim.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We decided to have the builder sheetrock over the opening and put our TV elsewhere. I didn't think the TV would look good there, adn didn't want to be looking up all the time to watch TV.

You may want to consider storing all your electronics in a seperate cool dry area of your home. Cables can be run to your TV and speakers. There are controllers available that will control all of your equipment (stereo receiver, DVD, VCR, cable box etc) from one master remote. The beauty of a system set up that way is that instead of having everything stuffed into an A/V cabinet where you can't get at any of the wiring, when stored remotely your equipment will usually be on a rack with everything accessible. It will cost more for the longer wires but may be well worth it in the future. The great thing is that your home is still under construction so it's a relatively easy install. If you do nothing else ask your builder to run a conduit that you can pull wires through in the future should you wish to do so. Good luck.
