I was in a 1965 home yesterday and for the first time in my life a saw a home that all the waste lines were copper. The fittings were brass and everything was soldered beautifully. It was a foreclosed home and i'm surprised it wasn't ripped out for scrap, it would be so easy. 3 inch line runs the length of basement. Has anyone here seen copper waste lines? maybe its common someplace else, just curious. Oh, funny thing is the supply lines are Galvanized.

Not uncommon.
But somewhat unusual for a house built in the '60's. Houses were in transition then from cast iron to ABS and/or PVC.

Our house was built in '51, most of the waste lines have been replaced with PVC on the inside before we purchased it, it appears the original was cast iron. It's weird setup with four pipes exiting the house at different points, we believe there might be a gray water system but have not been able to confirm it yet. That's a project for this summer. There is one exception with a 2 inch copper pipe for one gray water drain, I don't know if its origianl or not but I don't think so.

Our house, built in the 60's, has copper waste lines above ground and cast iron underground. My thinking is copper weighs less than cast iron, so it was cheaper to transport it here at the time. I'm guessing PVC and ABS wasn't acceptable at the time. It now has some ABS parts from remodeling.

One of the main problems with cast iron is it's loud. Copper is much quieter and easier to work with as well. Otherwise it's common in 60's and many 70's homes to see copper waste lines.
