What is the advantage of using an insulated register box/boot versus a non-insulated register box? Does the insulation in the boxes deteriorate when they get old?

What is the advantage of using an insulated anything?
And yes.... everything deteriorates as it gets old.

Why use one? From a builders standpoint, that is someone who generally won't spend a dime if a nickle will get the job done...
it was likely either no cost difference to them or they were told they needed to us these fittings.
