My builder is giving me a mailbox post and mailbox from homedepot - the cedar post and a regular mailbox. I was thinking of something a little beefier out of wood. However, I look at home depot and lowes and only see the ones that my builder is getting. Are most mailbox posts custom? dont want the vinyl or metal... Where would l look for a post?

Google "mailbox post" and you'll find many nice (fancy) metal ones and vinyl that looks like painted wood.

Go to a lumber yard. Buy a 6x6 cedar post. Rent a BIG saw. Curse lots. Make something that mostly works. OR go to Walpole Woodworkers | Wood Fence, Vinyl Fence, Pergolas, Arbors, Gates, spend an unconcenably large sum but end up with a really nice mailbox post. They even have granite pillars.

In many places, a heavy duty mailbox holder is illegal. They can kill people who slide or swerve off of the road. You may be limited to somethig that will readily break off if hit by a car. Check with your local Governmental agency in charge of your road or street.

Where? Look up any state and its listed as a reckless driving offense with property damage. The driver of the car gets a ticket and their insurance company gets a bill for the property damage. The only way a home owner may get a partial liabilty if it doesnt meet the minumum requirements of height and distance from the edge of the road.

Since the builder is supplying the labor, he shouldn't have an issue with you ordering your own and he crediting you the home depot cost of the the post, box and numbers.

With the mindset of law suits....civil action is reduced when a mailbox is installed to approved methods and materials with highway safety in mind.
The mailbox owner may be held liable in case of collision....

Since most of the time, your mail box will be on " right of way"....NO permanate structure. Has to be a break-away....

For ease of installation, size and durability, I like the one-piece molded poly mailboxes/stands as shown below. They hold a lot of mail and I like that they open from either side so I dont have to go into the street to get the mail. They come in either black or grey and, when I bought mine 15 years ago, the total cost was @ $75.00.
