I have been told not to do a sponge tilt out drawer by the sink because of the bacteria grows there. Is that true? I guess it is a dark place but what do people place their sponges? I am tired of placing the sponge on top of the countertop on a holder. I wanted something so I didnt have to see it and i thought the sponge tilt out drawer would be the way to go. Any suggestions?

Leave it out next to the faucet? Oh, the horrors!

I'll use one of those very small plastic coated racks that is big enough for a small pump bottle for the dish soap, the sponge, a small squirt bottle of windex, a piece of 3M scrubber pad and a finger nail brush hanging off the side.

Just dont answer if you are going to have stupid sarcasm - sick of your answers.

I have had it out next to the faucet for years - Not a big deal but since I am getting a whole new kitchen I wanted to know my options. what is the big deal with that?

i wouldnt put it in one of those little drawers because of the mold/ mildew issue. especially if youre getting a new kitchen!

maybe keep new/ dry/ unused ones there for storage but not wet used ones. ew.

you can buy cute little pottery/ ceramic type sponge holders that will hide it if you just dont like seeing it next to the sink, i guess.

It is actually more a mold issue than bacteria. I've never run across anyone who used sponges having an issue with leaving the out to dry. I suppose if you had to rig up something, it would be a chimney shape open at top and bottom, but it would still get unpleasant inside it.

I keep mine in the tilt out drawer and have for many years. That compartment is far from air tight, so the sponge drys out loooong before any mold could possibly take hold...

My experience has been that it takes a day or two for the sponges to dry. I think they are germy and smelly anyway and not my favorite. When I do use a sponge, I use the kind with a scrubber on the back and put it in the dishwasher when I'm finished and reuse it a few times. I am a white-dishcloth-that-I-can-bleach kind of girl. I use a clean dishcloth at least once a day and sometimes more depending on what I'm wiping up.

WE use a soap dispenser scrub brush similar to this, and store it handle up in a pretty pottery pitcher that sits next to the sink. The soap in the sponge and what runs off in the pitcher keeps it sanitary.

I've been using the tilt out holder behind the panel under the sink for as long as I can remember. I've never had a problem with bacteria or mold. I would think it would only be an issue if you put a sopping wet sponge in there and left it alone for days on end. Or never cleaned the trays. The way the trays are installed, they pop out easily to be cleaned.

I personally don't like the sponges and stuff hanging out on the counter either, so I understand where you're coming from.

Gee, I thought those tilt out trays were to hold the garbage disposer wrench.
