Hi,

Our exterior wood siding need a paint job. I am confused whether should we paint the house or go with the vinyl siding.

Can anyone of you please recommended which would be beneficial over long run?

How much does it normally cost to get each job done with painting or vinyl siding?

Please advice.

Thanks
Gary

Go with the vinyl siding. It will add value to your house (unless you're in a historic district...) and is very easy to care for. You don't want to have to keep repainting your house over and over...also, if and when you sell, its a plus.

Differing opinions. I agree that vinyl is easier to care for and in the long run MAY save you money. I don't agree that it adds any significant value to your house. Personally, I hate vinyl siding and would never consider paying any more for a house that has vinyl versus a wood clad one right next door. I think vinyl is so standard now that most people don't perceive it as anything value-added to the house when they buy it. Matter of fact, we have friends that just bought a house in tolland and while they ooohed and aahhhd over the central air, floors, laundry room, size, etc - not once did they mention how lovely the vinyl siding looked....

what kind of wood siding?
how old?
what is the general condition of the wood (aside from needing paint)?

cutting to the chase:
In almost all instances... paint (done well) will be the way to go.

Vinyl siding is mostly used to hide problems underneith. Most wil take a well maintain painted home over vinyl siding any day. IMO';vinyl looks cheap and even worse with any years on it.

Vinyl siding is today what asbestos shingle's of the 60's were. The builders just use it.

Nothing special, no maint except for a power wash here and there. Comes in a larger variety of colors now. I wouldn't say it adds any real value though because everyone can afford it. It is just with our busy lives, like who really wants to have to paint a house, or spend the money to have someone do it, where the vinyl is mostly maint free...

My brother 5 yrs ago built a 700,000.00 custom home in Michigan and used stacked rock on front of home and on walkout basement backside, he used high mil thick vinyl. It looks fine and today it still does and it saved thousands of dollars so he could spend thousands of dollars on landscaping boulders. lol.

He spent 10,000.00 on fancy front door and everyone comes thru the garage.

I own a 110 yr old wood sided house and need to paint in a yr but we are thinking about vinyl instead just cause it will be easy to maintain. But we will spend extra for the thicker mil rating.

Wood requires priming or painting every few years (it's porous), while vinyl does not. The rest is up to you.

You could go down the middle and use the kind of hardie board that doesn't have to be repainted after installation.
