I agree about Service Magic. I used them a few times to find handymen and never got a halfway-decent job out of any of them. I'm not exaggerating when I say that ALL the work those guys did had to be torn out and re-done once I found a good handyman.

Heh, about a quarter of the jobs I get are going in behind other people and fixing the work they supposedly did.
The best way to find a reputable contractor is to check them out rigorously beforehand. A check of their listing in the yellow pages or web sites reveals a lot about their competencies. Oooooh, color pictures...pretty. I then park across the street from a couple of the finalists in a white panel van and watch them for a day or two to see how much goofing off goes on. Sometimes, I'll follow one of the suits home and "observe" him and his family to see if they appear on the up-and-up. If they don't quite measure up to my expectations, I'll take a rake or patio chair for my troubles.
