The short story is that Cedar looks great until it loses it's natural oils and then becomes susceptible to termites. This link recommends Steel post in concrete, filled with concrete as well, pressure treated pine rails and cedar pickets.
I think this is the route I am taking with our new fence/home.
I'd recommend cedar has stated its a btter matrial. Also if using the new treat material it needs to be stacked and dry ebcause it comes pretty wet compared to the old chemical.Alos make sure you know what fasteners to use with each as the new chemical is murder on fastenrs ycheaper galvanised.
We need to decide on what type of fence to put up around the backyard of our new home. We have 4 dogs (3 over 100 lbs.)
The fence guy say pressure treated pine because it lasts just as long as cedar and is cheaper.
I want to put in the better fence for durability and quality. I've heard the pine can warp and split very easily. I've read Red Cedar is better and naturally rot and insect resistant.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cedar......The only choice. We have an old cedar fence, I love the natural greying.....if you don;t just pressure wash it. I have had pine, it bows, isn't as long lasting. Cedar would be my suggestion...beautiful fencing, worth the price imo.
I'm very intrigued by the idea of a vinyl fence. I googled photos and really like the way it looks. I presume it's very expensive. Does anyone have a vinyl fence or know anything about how long they last and approximately how much they cost per linear foot? I know the price will vary by area but I just want a ballpark figure.

I was at Home Depot early this year and they had a display of wood, vinyl and composite 6' X 8' panels that they sold, seems like the vinyl prices were pretty competitive with wood. That didn't include installation.
I checked my fencing guys web site and they won't quote a price without looking at the job.
There have been a few installations around here and they look pretty good.
I agree with you on the bug box issue. I would contact a few of your local fencing companies to get pricing. I have used my local company for years and they are pretty fair on their pricing for removal of the old and installing the new.
I am not a fan of the panel sections of wood or vinyl. Reasoning is you better be spot on with your post spacing or you will fight it all the way.
