Has anyone used high wattage CFL's? I notice that there are 105 watt which is like a 600 watt incandescent, and 200, which must be really bright. I am looking to light up the garage at a lower cost and don't want to get special fixtures for metal hydride lights.
I have seen these in discount stores but never tried one. Garage Mahal already had tube type floursecent lights and metal halides as well before CFLs became so popular. Some CFL bulbs don't respond well to being used with the screw-in plug uppermost, I have read.
They are not terribly expensive though, so I would say go for it.

I just ordered two 105 watt from Amazon $19 and will report on their characteristics. But I really wanted the 200 watt one but it was $91.
Since the ones that are supposedly like a 100 watt incandescent are really more like a 40 watt bulb, I suspect that the ones that are purportedly as bright as a 600 watt incandescent are probably closer to 100. However I will also wait for your report. They could be useful for porch lights.
I'm using one of the 105 watt ones in each of my outdoor fixtures, one in the rear and one in the front. I've had them in for about 6 months now with no issues. They provide good light, much better than the incandescents that were in there.
Wow, is Amazon fast or what? I got the 105 watts today and tried them out. Very bright. About 300 watt equivalent i would say. Maybe a little more. I have a 500 watt halogen floor lamp that seems a little brighter.
I think I am going to try them out in clip on reflector sockets. the aluminum reflector should direct the light well to the ceiling in the basement and they won't have to be upside down. Will report what two of them look like in one room.
I will try them. Are there brighter ones? Do they make yellow ones?
