I love that idea-a breezeway or a bridge as it were, that's how I would design it.

I did a similar design of a new master suite above an existing detached garage for a tiny 800 s.f. craftsman cottage, the 500 s.f of new space would have otherwise overwhelmed the sweet house so the addition looks like a detached carriage house from most angles, only from the side by the garage can you notice the "bridge" addition. Much easier to construct that way, you don't need to re-engineer the existing structure. I guess it depends on how much lot size you have to work with but I did this in a typical city lot 50' x 110' here.
