Found a few statistics and I was surprised that one third are forced entrys and two thirds are through an unlocked door or window.

28 percent of burglaries involve people at home: good doors-windows prevent violent crime

"One of the warnings from crime prevention specialists is for homeowners and renters to lock their windows and doors.
This is what one of us wrote on this site a year ago, “Most burglaries take place through open doors and open windows. In a third of the completed burglaries, the burglar forced entry into the home; in two thirds, the burglar gained entry through an unlocked door or open window.” See http://crimeinamerica.net/crime-prevention-tips-that-work-3/.
This observation was based on Bureau of Justice Statistics data (BJS-of the US Department of Justice) and is many years old.
Now we find that a new document from the Bureau of Justice Statistics repeats this warning– the issue of unlocked doors and windows remains with us. In the category of unlawful entry (versus forcible entry) we find that overwhelmingly, the principle method of entry was through an open door or open window".

The only thing that would annoy me about that, is that the intruder would get blood all over the oriental rugs, as he gets hit with 10 rounds/second with the full auto. Since I am here basically 24/7, I really don't need an alarm system.

Pretty much how I feel about the situation:

Gunny & Glock - Wrong House - YouTube

First, live in a free state where you can easily legally defend yourself and obtain the best tools to do it.

key is to make the burglar have to burn up time. There is no way you can keep someone out of your stuff forever, but if you can add 5-10 minutes to his estimated time, he'll likely reconsider. So you want "layers of inconvenience"

1 - locks on all doors windows, leave fake keys outside... all of this wastes time
2 - Make thing invonvienent to steal, examples: heavy tv's, lock your computer stuff to the desk table, tie things together with cable locks (example: 1 gun/computer/TV is easy to steal, many locked together and/or to a solid piece of furniture is NOT). Bolted down safes in places not easily wrestled out, write the wrong code number on the safe. If you cant afford a safe, install a lock on the closet. Place values as far from the main/1st floor as possible. This is again all about waisting time and energy
3 - monitored alarm system or the e-Dog thing, thieves hate noise
4 - lots of lights, thieves hate light
5 - Plant sharp/pointy plants by all ground level windows and doors, thieves do not like being thrown in the briar patch.

Burglars could gain access to your home and shoot your dogs and you before you knew what was going on. Get an alarm system and set it when you are at home. An alarm system will give you a heads up as soon as intruders even try to get into your home. Be safer - get an alarm.

We use these:

IF we wanted to use a gun, it might be hard to decide which piece of the burglar to shoot at.
