Changing your heating system so that you can put a lazy susan or equivalent is not a reasonable economic decision. Its like trading in your car because you have a bigger purse that doesn't fit behind the seat. If you make a change to the kitchen only, you will be fooling around with two thermostats and two heat zones. Seems just frivolous.

Converting your heating system just b/c of your kitchen is frivolous. having 2 tstats coming up wiht a supplimental heating system isn't

I must be very frivolous, I have 5 Tstats in my house between the radiant heat and the hot air heat

Really?
You should look into organizing that mess into one overall master system.

or - they make something that lays (i believe) under the tile that's electric heat. i've heard it doesn't really heat the room - just heats the floor. but if insulation in the kitchen is good, you shouldn't need much heat in the kitchen anyways.
The kitchen is going to go through a gut reno. there will be R-15 installed on the exterior wall.

I'll talk to my GC to see if tapping into the potable hot water for in-floor heating is an option, thanks.

I tend to think that anyone doing a gut reno of anything bigger than a powder room really really ought to consider doing energy audit and budgeting for things like hydronic radiant heat and heating plant upgrades. People are getting much smarter about this. Energy is never going to be cheap. If you put in systems that make your home more efficient and comfortable you both get to enjoy those items TODAY and appreciate the savings every month!
