Lucky your house didn't burn down.

I came home one day to find a surge protector busted (kind of like someone took a hammer at it). No smoke or charred outlet like your pic, but there must have been a 'surge' of some sort. Luckily nothing was affected (TV, etc. were plugged into it) and I got a new one and plug it back into the same outlet. It's been years now and nothing has happened. So it's still a mystery what happened.

because there was no short-circuit. just an overload of the night light, not the breaker.

Correct and it happened really fast with next to no chance of drawing over 20 amps.
