In the last 2 days, we have seen 2 live bees in our basement. We are in the Northeast and while it has been a mild winter, my guess is that there is a hive somewhere in the basement. I have no intention of dealing with this myself and will call an exterminator--what I'm wondering is, other than listening for a buzzing sound, how can I try and find the hive?
Is it possible that there isn't a hive and this is just a fluke? Seems unlikely. Anyone who has had a similar experience, please weigh in, thanks.
If you think they are honeybees, maybe you could find a beekeeper rather than an exterminator. If the hive can be located, perhaps it can be moved without killing the bees.
The only time I've had wasps in the house they were in the chimney and came in when the fireplace damper was opened.
Two live bees do not make a hive. That said, you can go around and listen to the walls. You can hold a drinking glass up against the wall and put your ear to it and listen for buzzing/humming sounds.

Very sound advice (no pun intended). I found a couple bees nests inside my walls of a home we bought once using my wife's stethoscope (she is a nurse). You can get a cheapy pair at just about any pharmacy that will work much better than a glass, even though a glass works very good. It is easier to listen toward the top of a wall with a stethoscope because you don't have to climb up and jam your head against the ceiling.
