Hot water doesn't get hot only lukewarm, thinking about changing the temp setting from med-low to med-high then change it when there is no hot water at all. Or should I just change it now? heater is 9,10 years old it's gas.

Just get the same size as current one right? 75 gallons how much will that run me? thanks for reading and help

dunno how much the heater itself costs but usually a plumber will charge anywhere from 100-300 for installation.

There are 2 elements in a WH If one goes out normally it can be replaced. However if it is 10 years old, replace it now. It's not worth repair at that age. Have a licensed plumber do the work for you -- don't skimp on that.

I happen to have some experience with water heaters;

1) if its electric, the heater may be encrusted with scale, and thats why its not working
IT CAN BE CLEANED and you can get more life out of it,

2) If its a gas water heater, the flue's may be dirty, again, a cleaning would help
(also a dirty water heater can cause other problems with carbon monoxide)

3) the ONLY time you need to replace a water heater is when its leaking.

Also they just passed a new law where new water heaters are more efficient, but the design is they are
larger around and squatter (shorter) that alcove that most water heaters live in may be too small, and
a wall has to be moved, or at least modified.

YMMV

Jonathan

If it is electric it may have two heating elemets, if so one is bad so the water is not heating fully.

$450ish for a 50 gallon. I am handy but not a plumber and replaced a 10 year old gas unit for the same size and brand. It was a 20 minute install and not complicated. You don't even have to solder pipes for most water heater installs.

He said gas. So it is likely gas...

75 gallons is a bigger tank. $600 to $700 plus install. $250 or $300 for install. Note they now require a building permit and earthquake straps. You can do it yourself though the permit is still required and the straps. You can of course ignore all that on a DIY at your own risk.

Installation is not difficult, but moving the water heater (gas) is a two men job. Plus, you will have to dump the old one.

If you're spending that much to replace, you MAY want to consider a tankless... They are a lot more efficient, and will save you money in the long run... If you're not moving/selling anytime soon, it's worth a look into a tankless water heater.

Good luck -

Since it is a gas heater, the problem sounds like sediment has collected on the bottom of the tank thereby reducing the heat transfer. You could try to flush the sediment out by connecting a rubber garden hose to the drain spigot. However, I doubt that will work since the hard water minerals in the Vegas Valley water attaches to the water heater lining. When you buy your next water heater make sure it is made to clean the bottom of the tank as you use hot water. If you don't have a water softener you might want to think about getting one. A mild coating of the lime extends the life of the gas water heater but eventually the lime clogs everything up. Be sure to check you pressure relief valve to make sure it is still working.
