Found out today that our sewer lines have a backwater valve installed to keep everyone else’s sewage out of our house in the event of a mishap and backup with the city’s sewer lines. Thinking about getting sewer backup insurance for about $50 a year but I hear that there is generally an exception that if the backup is due to flooding/heavy rain that it isn’t covered. Is this typical for sewer backup coverage? Anything else you can recommend to make sure we don’t have problems down the road with the backwater valve malfunctioning and creating problems?

Nope.

Why? You already have a whole lot more than anyone else does.
That type of insurance is so limited that it makes no sense. What causes a backup - tree roots, bad joints, old broken piping, people flushing stuff they shouldn't flush. All of those are easily correctable.
