Rug Doctors are great. (Enough so that I bought my own!) Very easy to use--the hotter the water the better.
You will need to buy cleaner and anti-foamer, but they will last you forever if you are only cleaning one carpet a few times a year. The new cleaner with Oxy-Clean in it is great. I'd suggest pre-treating bad stains.
Lowes charges $24.99 per day for the machine.
The cleaning liquid is extra, prices depend on how many gallons.
I guess $50 for one room by a cleaning specialist is as economical as renting the machine.
I'd think, wrongly it seems, that when you rented the machine from Lowes, the cleaner bottle on the machine would be full, and you pay what is needed to refill it when you bring it back.

I paid the $20+ base rate for a 24-hour rental from Safeway (got a coupon from Rug Doctor's site) and used a third-party cleaner that worked just fine. I used it for for two large bedrooms and had plenty of time left over. I also opted for the upholstery attachment for the sectional and was glad I did.
Glad I came across this thread. I was wondering about renting a carpet cleaner as well since haven't decided on one to buy. I will look at reviews for cleaners to buy and depending on where you look you can see good on one site and terrible on another for the same machine.
Annerk..where did you purchase your Rug Doctor? I am just asking if you have to buy it through the company itself or if they sell them in the store. I tried Google but it talks about renting them. How much do they usually run?
I bought mine directly from Rug Doctor through a former employer's account with them, I think I paid about $400 including the upholstery kit. With two large dogs in the house, it's more than paid for itself. I clean the carpets every month and spot clean as needed in between.

I have 6+ stores in my city, that rent the Rug Doctor, and under $20 from what I see. Food Lion, Bi-Lo, Dollar General.
It might be like computer printers. They give you a great deal on the machine, but charge you an arm and leg for the bottle of cleaner.
As far as the Bissel, it uses a 2x formula. The 8 ounce bottle is around $11.99. I hope the 8 ounces is mixed with water, because 8 ounces is less than a can of Pepsi.
We have two cats that barf and for years we have used a Hoover Steam Vac on our rugs. It works quite well. Not sure on model and ours is old but you fill it with hot water and a cleaning solution. Needs to be emptied as one goes along. We use it for spot cleaning (4x4ft max) only.
Our experience with national carpet cleaning companies (some steamer company) has not been good. Our experience with local cleaners (call a local carpet store and ask for their recommendation) has been good.
We also have been eliminating carpet in favor of hardwood.
