My suburblet is a later development in the area, and we're actually in the service area for the local rural electric cooperative. Take the bridge to the west of us or the bridge to the south of us, and those areas are both served by Gulf Power. We've essentially got the same rates that Gulf Power does and the only real differences I've seen are that there's an annual shareholders meeting with pony rides and a bouncy castle for the kids and some seriously good door prizes, and every so often they'll mail you a small rebate check when they exceed their allowable cash reserve amount. (Last time we got one, it was like $20. Pizza night on Chelco! w00t!)
In my experience, a gas dryer will dry your clothes faster than an electric. I know when drying laundry at my in-laws (electric) it takes about 10-15 minutes longer per load.
Also, where are you getting your $1000 estimate to extend your gas line? I know someone who had done the work for a living, they stopped over & we extended my line in a day. Obviously you don't have the same situation but just think of the job. Parts (~75-125) + Labor ($30/hour * 8) + Profit (~20%) = ~$450.
You should get a quote for this work... if you got one, get two more.
I hope this helps, a gas dryer is the way to go... I just wanted to show you it isn't so expensive.
If you already have a gas line located inthe same area it should not cost you the amount you have stated. You'll need a sgut off valve for both appliances, Water tank and dryer, electric outlet for the dryer and black pipe and fittings as needed. 10' of black pipe is only around $25, shutoff valve $7, duplex and wiring 25' about $30 , dryer vent $15 a couple elbows or whatever misc $20 . You're paying a plumber $50 an hr 2 hrs $100....that's a far cry from $1000. unless you are including the dryer cost of $700. Remember water & electric don't mix. go with the gas
The easiest way to reduce your drying time is to buy a front loading washer. Clothes come out of the washer much drier than with a top loader.
There are two dryers in my laundry room. One gas, one electric. Both fairly recent models, same cf.. The electric dries much quicker than the gas model.
Why two dryers? LOL... Converted two family into one.
