We now own our first house that has a septic system, Growing up I don't remember my parents getting their system pumped out often, actually i don't remember them ever doing it. it seemed to function just fine and after 34 years, the original septic tank and leach field is still working just fine.
When we purchased our current house we had the septic system inspected and the septic guy said that the tank could use a pumping and should be done every 2-3 years. (more or less depending on how many people are using it)
Since its just the of us, I will probably get it pumped every 5 years. Does this sound reasonable? too often, not often enough?
Thoughts?

It depends on usage. There are charts, for the wife an me, our tank should be pumped in about ten years. No garbage disposal, two people, large capacity tank.
In your shoes, I'd pump now, then in two years use a stick to figure the sediment and cap thickness, and go from there on the date of the third pumping. - Pump during the dry season if possible so that the ground is solid for the truck.

As harry chickpea pointed out have it pumped now and then I would say in three years have it pumped again to give yourself an idea of how much usage you have. Also ask your septic maintenance company that performed the inspection what you should watch out for as signs that possibly you might need it pumped sooner. I am confident the septic company would be more than happy to answer those questions.

We had a septic (for a 3 bedroom house, not sure what size that would be) and we had it pumped every 3 years or so. This was for a family of 4.

With just two of us, we can go at least 5 years. And when we did have it pumped, it wasn't full. (thankfully)
Our man is a neighbor who does it as a side job. So it does not cost much and well worth whatever the cost to have it checked and drained.
