The idea is old. Mother Earth News and others had articles on that type of collector in the 1970s.
Genius it is not. In a box collector, efficiency is going to be based upon insulation, speed of airflow and difference in temperatures between intake / outtake / ambient air. Further efficiency can occur with highly transmissive glass and an absorber design that minimizes reflection of radiation. Cans are not ideal, they simply have a good cost/result ratio if you don't have a lot of money.
