You must wear gloves or the oil on your hands reflects the heat back and kills them quickly.
I'm aware of the fact you can't touch them. I do not and have always used gloves. It is also located directly under the eave of the roof, so no leaves or branches are hitting it. I have it on a 5 minute cycle. I was thinking it was the wind. No moisture that I can see, but then again, I'm damn near risking a fall from 30+ft when changing out the bulbs.
I posted later that a 250w is doable, we just have a LONG way to shine from the roof to the ground to make the light worthwhile. 250w is borderline, but works.
FWIW, it seems that hard white ceramic(?) are usually falling apart when I remove the old broken ones. I'm getting them from Lowes and Home Depot. Wal-mart does not sell anything above 150?
We have no rebates for LED/CFL conversions from our local power company (Progress Energy - Now Duke Energy).
Have you considered hiring an electrician to come out and move the light fixtures? We have motion security lights at the four corners of our house. But the rear ones, above a walk-out basement, would have been too high off the ground for us to easily change the bulbs so we had the contractor place them lower on the house. They are not terribly obvious and you can get light or dark colored fixtures, whichever would blend in best with your siding. The only place that might not work is if lowering them puts them on a level with trees/tall shrubs which might set off the sensor in windy conditions.
Im a rab distributor and yes those rab led 78 watt models are expensive.. . . . . .
i met the president of RAB a few weeks ago; did i hear him correctly that some of their LED's are water-cooled?
i was only half paying attention honestly as i'm locked in with another company on LED's but i was almost certain that's what he said. employee i had with me says he didn't hear it that way. just curious.
i sell quite a few cree retrofit kits for hi hats.
we do use the CREE LR6 recessed fixtures, but our customer uses a national acct's supplier we are required to purchase from.
btw, have you seen the new LR6 design? they replaced the metal with plastic and drastically reduced the size of the heat sink. many of them we pulled from the packaging were bent because the material is so flimsy.
the other stuff is custom designed and built for a specific application.
