If you could have either a home with a fireplace or a swimming pool -- one or the other --- which would you prefer? Including condos.

I've always lived in a 4-season climate and have lived in condos with pools, and one with a fireplace. I didn't use either that much. I've lived in one house with a fireplace and used it a lot in the winter. Loved it.

If I had to pick I would prefer the fireplace.

Most private pools are too small for swimming properly anyway and they're a lot of work, and don't look nice in the winter.

Fireplace.
We use our fireplace plenty!

Our neighborhood is lucky enough to have its own pool. No maintenance for me, or neighbors wanting to swim in my back yard, etc.

In our last house search I really wanted both however it seemed that the houses we looked at had one or the other. The homes with the pools had great backyards but the interior was outdated probably because the owners were paying for the pool. After much looking, a fireplace was more important to me.

I love swimming, but oh, the last time I had a pool, guess who got to clean it? ME! I'm a working wife, and everyday after work I had to come home, clean the kitchen, cook dinner, feed everyone, and then run out and clean the danged pool! Never again.

Ah, but a fireplace - that's lovely. Even a wood burning stove would be a welcome edition to my house! I'd take it in a heartbeat. Of course I'd have to have it inspected to make sure it wasn't so dilapidated that I'd have to get it fixed...
But out here in NY it gets cold, and with oil prices up, it makes sense to have an efficient wood burning something or other.
I like fireplaces...they make a home so comfy, it's a total requirement for me.

Fireplace, woodstove, pellet stove... any "alternate source of heat" would be my choice. We also live in a place that is cold for 8 out of 12 months .

A pool would get use for a couple months and then (maybe) a couple more as an ice rink .

My experience with having had both is neither, especially living where a pool will not be used mainly year round and living where it is cold enough to need a fireplace, but that might just be me.

If you must make a choice, the further north you go, lean toward a fireplace. The further south you go, lean toward a pool. but I still say neither.

It depends.
Since you didn't clarify-

If I were in the NE or the Rockies; f/pl without a doubt.
If I were in the SW or FL; a pool of course!
