Can you keep your trash can in your back yard? I have a privacy fence around my back yard so my cans can't be seen from the street.

Some of my neighbors don't have fenced yards but they keep their cans in the back yard, behind a couple of pieces of privacy fence that shield the cans from view.

Few ideas: If the trash smell is due to high biodegradable produce content, you may want to look into a mini composter. I've seen some advertised, but am not sure how effective they are.
Otherwise, if outside is not an option then rinse the containers of most offensive types of containers better that have tendency to stink. An example would be any empty dairy container, a good rinse quick wipe and spritz with a cheap cleaner should cover up most of the offensive odor even if inside garage. Also using shredded junk mail, newspapers, mixed with it will at least help absorb the odors a bit. Good luck.

I keep my 2 32-gallon trash cans plus all my recycling bins in my garage between pick-ups, which are only ONCE a week. The trash cans both have lids so they don't smell at all (unless I open the lid of one that is full of bags of used cat litter ). It's winter here so my garage is full of cold air and maybe that helps, but I don't remember any smells from this past summer either. Do your trash cans have lids on them? Is it really hot where you are?

Keep old food that you are going to throw away, in the fridge until just before pickup day. Wash all food containers. Use plastic grocery bads to double bag things like chicken bones before putting into the main garbage bag, and keep them sealed and in the fridge until pickup day. Bleach out your garbade can, use bags with scents or baking soda. Lysol spray the can in between washings. Tie your bags tightly before putting them in the can. Rotten food stinks. Basically, clean your garbage and garbage can better.

Do you put your trash in a trash bags and tie it tight before inserting into your trash bin? Or you just threw it lose into the bin? Do you disinfect your bin periodically?

I keep my trashcans in the garage also, and can only smell them when I open the lid. I put the trash in plastic trash bags & knot it up before I put it into the trash can. If I have something spoiled that I know will get more smelly in the warm garage, I leave it in the refrig until the night before trash day. I wait until I take the cans down to the curb before I put the spoiled food (in a bag) in it. I may wash the bin out once during the summer, or when the inside bottom gets really dirty, but I don't disinfect it. Never have.
