Your opinion. I enjoy the SECURITY I have in my GUARDED GATED community that keeps the riff-raff out.
I like knowing that my neighbors are compelled to maintain their property to a high standard and that I won't have cars on blocks or RV's covered in blue tarps in the side yard.
I like not having my neighbors tighty-whities hanging on a line outside my window.
I like the recreational and social amenities that my HOA provides.
Some HOA's are over bearing, not all are. Most have common sense rules. It's the few crazy ones you hear about in the news, not the tens of thousands of good ones.
Infill housing full of asbestos and lead paint with un-grounded electrical and energy sucking window A/C units instead of energy efficient central air.

We didn't want to live in an urban setting, even in a newly built home (which would have had the same building materials as the one we ultimately built in the suburbs. The older homes we looked at were disasters that would have cost more to remediate than they were worth. We didn't want to live in a "new urbanism" setting because we wanted some space between our home and our neighbors. Also the "new urbanism" HOA's around here are the worst of the bunch as far as ridiculous rules.

"tighty-whities" ! I'm laughing so hard right now ! I haven't heard that for quite a while.
We like air drying laundry and, I (not my goody two shoes wife) am definitely riff raff so I guess I'll never have to pay homeowners dues, Darn !
We don't mind buying a parcel with common sense covenants though, wouldn't be happy watching a "Swine Operation" or a "Dairy Farm" going in next door as I am planning to retire in our new home.
I didn't read all the posts so I don't know if the folks who did the clean up were approved by the HOA or did they do it in secret and are not identifying themselves.
By the way that link in the first post, to the article made my computers security system go off with warning dialogs when I clicked on it. What's up with that ?
Chances are he violated the written rules and regs that he agreed to when purchasing the home. If the association changed the rules without a community vote, shame on them. If he ignored the rules, shame on him.

Actually if you'll read the article, it never addresses if this type of situation is covered in the R&R's.

I like to watch my clothes and my neighbors clothes blow in the breeze on the clothesline, doesn't bother me at all....I find it enjoyeable

Not all HOA's are "Stepford." Mine is pretty specific about some things to make sure it doesn't look like Stepford--houses adjacent to each other can't be the same base model or color for example. We have 35 homes and no two are alike. All are custom so each has it's own unique attributes yet they all compliment each other architecturally. Bottom line, you are lumping every HOA into one pot, and you couldn't be more inaccurate with your assumptions.
failure to keep patio clean or at least not use it for massive storage is grounds for litigation.
