Some people never buy a second hand anything.
Always take cars to dealers for repairs.
Never use grocery coupons.
Have an income higher than $1116 a month.
Have a credit card.

This $55 Dansby will work perfect if the Whirpool does not cool down.

Absolutely true, however the evap coil looks to be in good condition. The differences in pressure - slight as they are - and the common technique of allowing the condensate to be heated by the hot coil to evaporate it make a high side leak more probable.
i can't tell you how many low side leaks i repaired out in the field with still positive pressure.. they are just as common on the low side i found as vibration at joints are a bigger factor then the pressure inside the lines for causing small leaks.

high side leaks are usually easier to spot because they leak with more force , especially if oil is coming out too..

No oil or any visible fluid at all leaking from mine.
I'm not going any futher with mine, or I would not have bought the Dansby.

Just curious, what is an average cost to repair a low side leak?

it depends where and how accessable.... usually you have to empty the system , fix the leak and pull a vaccuum for hours and recharge .

i have not done this work in decades although i still know how.

i would say with port to port traveling time about 200 bucks today as a guess.

Howard, I hope your Dansby freezer has a static evaporator (no fan); less complicated and less to go wrong with it.

I removed the door to get it in the house. I was going to remove the 4 shelves, but they do not come out. The cooling tubbing is a part of the shelves, etc.

Another 14 hours have passed. On a setting of 4 the Whirpool is stuck at 40 degrees. I turned it up to 5 for it's final attempt to go lower.
Another 14 hours has gone by and the Dansby, at a setting of only 1.5 is down to 10 degrees.

Not yet.
I found a repairman who will diagnose the problem for $29.99.

They haul out the old and bring in the new.
Years ago, my brother had a 4 year old washing machine that he was getting rid of... his wife didn't want to spend good money after bad.
I asked him for it and spent under $20 to fix it... gave it to our Mom and she has never had a single problem with it...
I do really well with people's cast offs and they cast off a lot of things around here.

The repairman is coming from a real appliance repair business. They guarantee their work with a warranty. It's worth $29.99 to find out what is wrong. I actually have someone wanting to buy it "as is."

I can post the receipt for the service call, to satisfy the people who seem to be skeptical bash types. Why do these type forums have so many?

The guy has given alot of advice by e-mail and phone.
One possibility is the cold control thermostat. That may be a part I can change myself.
