I just got a quote for putting in carpet in my bedroom. Its came out to 17 sq yard. and the cost was $780.00 plus 30$ for an upgrade in pad.

I have zero carpet pricing experience. Husband things it's a bit high.

Too hard to tell without knowing what carpet and pad you're getting.

You're at $47 per yard. We have some carpet in our house that IIRC was about $60 per yard.

You get what you pay for in carpet. DON'T skimp on the pad. Get the best you can afford (or are comfortable with).

I'm sure it would depend on the quality type of carpet...

If my math is right, that's coming out to about $5/sq ft .. which seems right in this area for a decent higher end carpet.

But you can also get pretty cheap carpeting (low end berber) at HD or Lowe's for maybe $2 / sq ft, and then get free (or $49) installation..

so it depends upon the quality of what you're getting.

Sq/ft is only a little relevant. Dimensions are what matters. E.g. If your room is 10x18 (20 sq/yd) , you'll need a piece of carpet that's 12x18 (24 yards).

I can't seem to find any pricing on Mohawk carpet (other then pre-sized area rugs).

Loop pile, cut pile, frieze, Berber?
Nylon, polyester, PET, wool?

And the list is not complete- the price is irrelevant when dealing with incomplete information.

Yes, you need to take the time to educate yourself about different types of carpet. Also, if price is such a concern, get estimates from several stores and compare--just make sure you understand what carpet you're getting and exactly what the installers will do so you can compare apples to apples.

I have had great luck with local flooring stores versus the big box stores. I look for one that has been in the business for a long time and check their reputation with locals.
