Nancy what you're looking for is a gas insert. Prices vary by model and manufacturer as well as installation costs. Roughly speaking installed somewhere in the $2 to $3K range assuming you already have gas.
you can definately do it without the insert, it also looks a lot better. the logset is a few hundred. the labor is really running the gas line, hooking up the logs is easy

..and the amount of heat it will produce is ZIP...! If it's just for looks, go with this approach. If you want heat, an insert is the only way to go. The difference in efficiency is about 5-15% compares to 89-90% with an insert..
Do some research before spending money for nothing...
OP, do you just want a fire for ambiance, with minimal work on your part, and minimal mess? If so, yeah, the gas insert will do that for you. But as Nayabone points out, it won't heat your house much if any, and depending on the fireplace design, may pull more heat out of the house and up the chimney (in the form of entrained, heated indoor air) than it puts into the house (mostly radiant heat from the flames).
To actually make economical heat, you want a gas (or maybe coal) burning insert.
