I had a building I was looking at 3000 ft of carpeting for but the pad looked brand new so I opted to not replace it. Lowes refused to sell me carpet without the pad. So I bought it at HD and had to get an outside installer to put it in. I got what I wanted and Lowes lost a sale on a good carpet.
If people lift a corner of the carpet to see if there are hardwoods underneath, and see an old dirty pad, they will wonder what else you cut corners on...
Heck, I have spilled that much on the bar during a night of drinking.
Not everyone lives your luxurious lifestyle, nor drinks as much as you do.

It's pretty darn hard to pull up a corner of carpeting. Regardless, the OP said the pad was in good condition.
We bought a house with brand new carpet. My son developed terrible allergies as soon as we moved in. We had a/c cleaned, vacuumed daily, moved plants away from his window outside. We finally ripped out the carpet as a last ditch effort. The padding was covered in mold and old animal urine . I was disgusted and it made we wonder what other gems we would find that they had cut corners on.
We do have pets; we are the second owners and the prior owners didn't have pets we know that for sure. No animals have ever eliminated on the steps leading down to the basement. I have a baby gate there that I keep gated (coming up the stairs laden with grocery bags is dangerous if dogs come running down to greet me). The carpet pad was clean and free of stains or mold. This is the first time I have ever reused existing pad. But, after reading some of these comments, I won't reuse pad in any areas where pets have been living....never thought about that before so thanks much!
Similar problem with Lowes today - we NEVER discussed padding, didn't want cost as we're doing this to list the house, and they slapped an extra $450 on estimate. Then they had at least 4 to 6 excuses for not explaining this up front, and trying to justify why it's the right thing. Now talking to other flooring stores but plan to post story at HomeTipsforWomen.com
