But, there are many different ceiling details that can inspire, besides your typical square or rectangular single step or multi-step trey. There's vaulted, barrel vaults, coffered, reverse trey, dome, and beamed (like hand-hewn as opposed to coffered). Ceilings by their very nature are flat and boring- treys and other types of embellishments add detail- a wow factor to an otherwise "yawn" ceiling.
Totally agree. I like trey ceilings and the architectural details they impart but how good they look is dependent upon the "tastes" of the decorator. I really like coffered ceilings the best. Here's one I like.

I concur that they are often done in extremely poor taste. Why people want their homes to look like garish Dim Sum restaurants on the inside is beyond me.

Dust collectors.... I hate the useless wall shelves for plastic plants & decorations that get all dusty too. I've seen inches of dust/ dirt build up. Ick

We have a simple unadorned tray ceiling in our large dining room...I like it.

We have a condo that has a tray ceiling in the bedroom. While I am not a huge fan of them usually, it does make the room seem more roomy. Hmmm the mirror is a GREAT idea! lol

I don't like starkly contrasting paint along the layers of the tray ceiling, or other busy embellishments, but with a solid color, or slight variation in color, I love them in general. In the house we just moved into, we have a single-height ceiling (9 ft) and it feels so closed in to me.

In a large room with a high ceiling, I think they can look nice. A lot of the pics in the first post have standard height ceilings - or ceilings which have been brought down below standard height so that bulkheads to form the tray can be put in. The proportions on that just look wrong and it makes the room look sort of squat.

I don't like tray ceilings either. I think they are ugly, and un-necessary.

besides it makes painting harder.

The pictures shown in the first post are horiffic.
